As an aromatherapist, I have always been fascinated at the ephemeral nature of scent. I am in awe at how scent is linked to our most cherished memories. 

People are drawn to aromatherapy because they often desire a more holistic and natural approach to supporting health and wellbeing. There is also a growing desire to reconnect with nature. MODULE i - 2hrs of lectures + 2 hrs study time

Foundations

Identify the skills required to be a natural perfumer; we compare the difference between aromatherapy blending and perfume blending; explore the art and science of blending essential oils; learn what it means to be open and receptive; examine the future of natural ingredients in perfumery and identify the risks of using synthetics in perfumery.

History of Perfumery

Explore the role of scent throughout the ages and across many ancient civilisations; we examine the relationship between alchemy and perfumery; we examine the rise of modern perfumery and explore the impact of science on perfumery.

MODULE iii - 3 hrs of lectures + 2 hrs of study time

Art of Smelling

Learn how to smell like a professional; learn how to overcome olfactory fatigue; learn how to describe scent and how to develop your own personal fragrant language and you will also be introduced to scent mapping and the perfume families. Explore the anthropology and philosophy of scent and examine the role of scent as a metaphor. We explore the hedonic nature of scent and discuss why scent is often referred to as the devalued sense.

MODULE iv - 6 hrs of lectures + 3 hrs of study time

Natural Aromatic Ingredients

Examine over 50 common and rare essential oils and absolutes that can be used in perfumery. We examine the odour profile of each essential oil, learn how to make odour associations and become skilled at how to create accords and blend each of the aromatic ingredients profiled.

The Biology and Psychology of Perfumery

Explore the relationship between smell and the influence it has on our psyche. We explore the role of olfaction in humans; we learn about the anatomy and physiology of olfaction; we discuss the importance of the higher olfactory pathways and their role in perfumery; we discuss the relationship between emotion, memory and scent; we examine the factors that influence perfume selection and match personality types according to aroma.

MODULE vi - 4 hrs of lectures + 2 hrs of study time

Creative Process

Explore the role of perfumery as an artistic expression; we learn the important features needed in creating a perfume; learn about the relationship between top, middle and base note and learn how to create a perfume accord. We study the blending techniques of many perfumers. There will be an opportunity to conduct many practical blending experiments to enhance our creative blending skills.

Practical Matters

Learn all about the different bases that can be used to create a perfume; we learn how to make a body mist, a room spray, an oil-based perfume, a balm-based perfume, a perfume oil and an ethanol-based perfume.  We learn the importance of aging a perfume and discuss the best ways to enhance the shelf life and stability of a perfume.  we discuss the importance of packaging and we learn strategies to market and promote your perfume creations.

Major Project

Many individuals consider blending of essential oils as the fun, playful aspect of aromatherapy. Blending essential oils can be an art, and like any art it requires a balance of practice, skills, and intuition. However, the information available on blending essential oils is rather limited so in order to develop my blending skills I turned to perfumery for some answers. 

I remember reading in one perfume text book the necessary attributes of a skilled perfumer:

"A perfumer has to be a chemist, laboratory technician, pharmacist, must learn to differentiate up to two thousand or so fragrant components, but more importantly their senses must be open and receptive to beauty, harmony, sounds, pictures, nature and above all, people."
